Concert Programme - 1 December 2024
HLO will be performing a wide range of both popular and rare light orchestral music for our next concert including;
Hoe-Down - a very lively and popular 'square dance' from the Aaron Copland ballet. A rousing crowd pleaser for any light orchestral concert.
The Floral Dance - extremely well known tune to most, however HLO will perform a newly restored recording transcription of the version performed by Harry Davidson and his Orchestra from the 1950s. The music characterises all the hustle, bustle and chaotic excitement and energy of the Helston Flora Day celebrations as exemplified so well in the original piano/vocal version by composer Katie Moss.
Someone To Watch Over Me - by George Gershwin. HLO perform a wonderful arrangement by Gerry McColl of this popular number, featuring our very own Rory McLouglin on Trombone. Gerry McColl or Major James Gerard McColl ARCM. He was appointed Director of Music, The Life Guards, in April 1984. Gerry has provided many arrangements and compositions for various musical ensembles during his illustrious career.
Sunset & Eventide - arr. by Laurie Jones. This is a fabulous poigniant arrangement of the bugle calls heard across many barracks to this day. Sadly Laurie Jones never heard this wonderful arrangement performed in public before his passing. Today the trumpet soloist is Lawrence Kilbride.
We do hope you enjoy our concert today and look forward to seeing you again very soon.
